Retsi Michael Pule is a celebrated South African jazz vocalist and composer, renowned for his smooth vocals and dynamic stage presence. Born in 1940 in King William’s Town, Eastern Cape, Pule’s early exposure to music came through school choirs and the Anglican Church Choir. His passion for jazz ignited during his youth, influenced by local artists like Dolly Rathebe and international jazz heard on the radio.
In 1968, Pule moved to Johannesburg, collaborating with notable musicians such as Early Mabuza, Barney Rachabane, and Dennis Mpale. A decade later, he released his debut album, Sdudla, which showcased a vibrant township jazz sound. Returning to the Eastern Cape in the late 1970s, Pule worked with pianist Tete Mbambisa and occasionally performed with the Soul Jazzmen band.
Pule’s contributions to South African jazz have been recognized with several accolades, including the ‘Lifetime Contribution to Culture’ award from the Department of Arts and Culture in 2017. He continues to perform and mentor emerging artists, exemplifying his enduring commitment to the jazz community.
