Zahara hailed from the Phumlani Informal Settlement near East London in the Eastern Cape. She was the sixth of seven children in a modest household\u2014her father worked at a battery factory, and her mother was a domestic worker. Displaying a passion for music from a young age, she began singing in her school’s choir at six and later became the lead singer of a local Sunday school choir. Her stage name, “Zahara,” meaning “blooming flower” in Arabic, reflected her blossoming talent.\u200b<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Zahara’s debut album, Loliwe<\/em> (2011), catapulted her to fame. The title track, “Loliwe,” resonated deeply, addressing themes of hope and resilience during apartheid.\u200b<\/p>\n\n\n\n
