โ€‹Zahara (born Bulelwa Mkutukana on 9 November 1987 โ€“ died 11 December 2023) was a celebrated South African Afro-soul singer, songwriter, and guitarist. Renowned for her emotive vocals and heartfelt lyrics, she sang in both isiXhosa and English, captivating audiences with her blend of traditional and contemporary sounds.โ€‹

Zahara hailed from the Phumlani Informal Settlement near East London in the Eastern Cape. She was the sixth of seven children in a modest householdโ€”her father worked at a battery factory, and her mother was a domestic worker. Displaying a passion for music from a young age, she began singing in her school’s choir at six and later became the lead singer of a local Sunday school choir. Her stage name, “Zahara,” meaning “blooming flower” in Arabic, reflected her blossoming talent.โ€‹

Zahara’s debut album, Loliwe (2011), catapulted her to fame. The album achieved double platinum status within 19 days of release, becoming South Africa’s second-fastest-selling album after Brenda Fassie’s Memeza. The title track, “Loliwe,” resonated deeply, addressing themes of hope and resilience during apartheid.โ€‹

Despite her professional achievements, Zahara faced personal challenges, including struggles with alcoholism and financial difficulties. In November 2023, she was hospitalized due to liver complications and sadly passed away on 11 December 2023 at the age of 36.โ€‹
